New York Legion Opens Camp for the 2015 Season
Peekskill, NY – The New York Legion Tackle Football Club opened camp on March 29, 2015 at Torpey Field in Depew Park. Torpey Field served as the New York Jets practice field from 1963 to 1969 and is now operated by the Peekskill High School.
Although the temperatures were cooler than expected, the team had a good turn out and most of the new players already appeared to be acclimated to the team thanks to the team meetings held prior to the start of practice.
The team is looking to rebound from a tough injury riddled 2014 season and the 2015 class of new recruits look very promising. We would also like to welcome the new players, Tyler Sherman, Jarrod Sherman, Devon Sherman, Tyrell Carver, and Tanner Hollister, that joined us from the Hudson Valley Cowboys. After many years of operation, the Cowboys venerable owners, Larry and Barbara Green, retired and disbanded the team resulting in the players moving on to different teams in the area.
The team is working with a new quarterback group this year. Trimmel Irish, John Robinson, and Tyler Sherman round out the new group of quarterbacks. While Trimmel and Tyler are new to the coaching staff, John Robinson is familiar with the team and his experience can only add to the quarterbacking group.
The recruiting class was very strong for the 2015. Other than the ex Cowboys, none of the new members of the NY Legion have played in the Five Star Football league. The new class of recruits has significantly increased the team speed and athleticism, especially in the secondary and linebacking corps. The team expects a significant increase in production from the linebacker position and the new recruits will play significant roles with returning veterans.
The defensive Line looks to rebound from injury and under performance from 2014. The Defensive line has been a strength of the team since its inception both on and off the field. Led by Kindu Green, the defensive line welcomes the return of Babatunde Cole, who missed the entire 2014 season due to injury. Joining Kindu and Cole, on the line is Andrew McGee, Rashawn King, Tanner H
olister, and Donny Smith. The four man line is expected to be very formidable for 2015.
The running back group consists of many styles or running back, from small scat backs to big running backs and bruising full backs. The addition of Greg Redd and Tyrell Carver will help the running back group of Mike Gray, Larry McLauchlin, and Anthony Holiday. This year, the team will display an embarrassment of riches at full back with Donny Smith, Jason Reid, and Joseph Panarese.
The receiving corp is led by veteran Vaughn Gooding and second year player Terrence Nugent. The new recruiting class has shown significant speed and athleticism and looks very promising. The expectations are high for this group.
Last but not least the offensive line looks to get healthy and build off of last year. With the addition of David Ramirez who arrived late last year and the healthy of Dante Mann and Lorenzo Bravo, the offensive line will look to provide smart, nimble, and precise blocking for the backs and quarterbacks.
Although camp has just begun, the team is very excited to start and expectations are high and the morale is great and a significant rebound from last year is expected.
